Zhongshan City has a population of around 2.5 million people and covers an area of 1800 km². It is situated in the mid-south of Guangdong Province, on the west bank of the Pearl River. Zhongshan is a prefecture-level city, which was originally known as Xiangshan in the Tang dynasty.
Zhongshan City is surrounded by other famous cities, with Guangzhou to its east, Zhuhai to its south, Jiangmen to its west, and Hong Kong and Macao in the vicinity. It is an area of China that is internationally well-known, as over half a million of its residents have moved abroad and are spread over 64 different countries. Zhongshan City comprises 19 townships, 4 districts and a new hi-tech development district. It has a subtropical monsoon climate, with an annual precipitation of 1851 mm and an average annual temperature of 21.8º.
